Abstract

Based on WHO protocols, Mexico established COVID-19 prevention measures. The objective of this study was to identify those sociodemographic variables that influence adherence to such measures, as well as to examine whether risky diseases affect the attachment to them. With a cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational methodology, a non-probabilistic sample of 3028 Mexicans answered an online questionnaire. Handwashing and obtaining information about the pandemic were the most frequently taken measures inside home; avoidance of kissing and hugging greetings, as well as crowded places were the most practiced away from home. In the adherence to the former ones, differences were obtained by age, schooling, and occupation; the adherence to the second ones was influenced by sex, the presence of children and the region of the country in which the respondents lived. Having hypertension, diabetes, heart conditions or HIV/AIDS was associated with increased adherence to out-of-home measures. The findings of the present study can contribute significantly to the design of strategies to increase adherence to measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, particularly in risk population.
